Department Financial Aid
The deadline is February 1. Qualified applicants whose files are complete
by the deadline are automatically considered.
- Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs): This is the main form
of funding from the department . GTA positions come with health insurance
coverage, a 100% tuition waiver as well as a substantial stipend. In the
2007-2008 academic year, the average academic year (i.e., nine-month) stipend
for new GTAs ranged from $13,500-$16,500. This amount is more than sufficient
to cover on-campus living expenses. Summer support is available to supplement
the nine-month salaries of outstanding students. To be considered for a
GTA position, international students need to achieve a minimum score of 50
on the TSE or 26 on the spoken component of the Internet-based TOEFL-iBT
exam or 8 on the spoken component of the International English Language Testing
System (IELTS).
- Fellowships and Graduate Research Assistantships: There are also a limited
number of fellowships and research assistantships available to graduate students.
- Conference Travel Award: Funds are available to graduate students who present
papers at conferences. Students who are on the job market may also apply
for funding to attend the annual American Economic Association (AEA) conference.
Students may apply by filing out an application form (download
forms). The
application should be submitted to the Graduate Secretary at least four weeks
before the scheduled travel date.
