KU Hosted the 11th Annual Midwest Health Economics Conference from September 14-16, 2022.


49 individuals attended the conference, including 33 from other universities, including the UIUC, UMKC, K-State, UIC, DePaul, Central Michigan, Wayne State, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Illinois State, Bentley, the Chicago Fed, Miami of Ohio, Arizona, Michigan State, Indiana, Mizzou, Cornell, Barcelona, Ohio State, West Virginia, and the UDSA Economic Research Service and 17 students.


8 papers were presented with discussants, and an additional 5 papers were presented as part of a lightning round.  Topics included were physician ratings, hospital upcoding, opioid use, cognitive ability, cancer research funding, abortion access, public hospitals, desegregation, food subsidies, childhood health shocks, emergency departments, and pollution.

The participants were able to observe the beauty of KU’s campus and of Lawrence from the roof of the Oread Hotel and a terrace in KU’s Memorial Union. They were also able to enjoy food and drinks from the Oread, Limestone Pizza, 1900 Barker Bakery, Wheatfields Bakery, and 715. Finally, about half the group was able to get a private tour of Allen Fieldhouse and the associated museums. View conference program for more information.
