FAQs

What are the prerequisites for admission?

In order to be successful in our program, MA candidates should have completed, at minimum, Calculus I-II, a statistics course (similar to Math 526), and intermediate courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. A bachelor's degree in economics is not necessary, but applicants should have knowledge in economics and an adequate background in mathematics. Please note that the MA program does not require the GRE, but you are welcome to send your scores if you wish to do so.

Does the department provide financial assistance?

Currently funding is available only for PhD students. MA students are responsible for securing their own funding. If funding is an issue, we recommend looking for funded Master's programs or applying to our PhD program. Please note: An MA is not needed to apply to the PhD program.

How much is tuition?

You can estimate tuition, using KU’s tuition calculator. Be sure to select “Graduate" as your level of study, and "Liberal arts & sciences" as your area of study.

What materials are needed to apply?

  • Applicant's résumé/curriculum vitae
    • Please use the following GPA calculator to determine your GPA if your degree-granting institution uses a grade/point system different from the one used in the U.S. To assist the Admissions Committee, you can list your converted GPA on your CV and the online application. Graduate Admissions confirms GPA estimates using this same GPA calculator. WES evaluation is not needed.
  • Statement of Purpose
    • You should declare your interest in the program, and its relationship to your graduate course of study and/or career objectives. It is helpful for you to specifically explain why you think the University of Kansas Economics is a good fit for you, how you can pursue your specific interests with us, and mention a professor or professors in our department whose research you find interesting.
  • Copies of official transcripts from each university or college you have attended.
    • Please do not upload grade reports from a student-accessed online portal. Transcripts should be issued from your university's Registrar's office, these usually have a seal/signature on them to denotes they are official.
    • Official transcripts (sent directly to KU from the Registrar) are not required until after you have been admitted into the program.
    • All transcripts should be received by the application due date for your application to be considered complete!
  • Three letters of recommendation
    • Contact information for your letter writers will be submitted in your application. Letter writers will then receive a request to submit a letter on your behalf electronically.
    • All letters should be received by the application due date for your application to be considered complete!
  • List of Math Courses
    • Please provide a one-page document on the academic courses you have taken that taught multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, and introduction to proofs. This should include a brief course description (or bulleted list of topics covered) as well as the textbook that was used.

When are applications due?

Applications open each year in September. Students wishing to spend their second year at KU must apply by January 6th in order to start their studies in the next fall semester.

When will I be notified of an admission decision?

Application review begins immediately following the deadline. MA candidates are notified within 7 business days. Please aim to have all materials submitted by the deadline (this includes letters of recommendation).
